What's happening: The Humanist Society Book Club will be meeting on Wednesday, May 17, at 1:30
The Book: Jon Meacham's American Gospel (God, the Founding Fathers, and the Making of a Nation). This hot new book, which deals with the role that religion has played in American politics, has received much attention. Meacham just appeared on Jon Stewart's Daily Show.
Borders is selling the (hardbound) book for $16 - list price is $23
Here are a couple of reviews from the Amazon web-site (the Short and the Longer of it):
I think anyone with the remotest interest in the role of religion in American history, or even more importantly, concerned about the Christian right influence in the country should read this book.
A very candid and unbiased presentation of the wonders and faults in the process of the founding and development of America and the proper role of religious beliefs (or lack of).
Where: Thanks to Ron and Barbara Holzwarth for providing a new locale for our meetings. Finally! Praise the lord :) Ron and Barbara live at 440 Wakefield Road. off Fairview Ave. in Goleta.
Take the Fairview exit off Highway 101 and go "up" (towards the mountains) to Berkeley Rd. Turn right and Wakefield will be the 4th left.
Their phone number is 967-5278
Hope to see you in May
