  • Saturday April 16, 3pm
    Special meeting at Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History's Fleischmann Auditorium,
    2559 Puesta del Sol Road, Santa Barbara.
    Edward Larson, author of "Summer for the Gods", a Pulitzer prize-winning book on the Scopes monkey trial, will speak on
    "Scopes Monkey Trial, Part II?".
    Professor Larson will discuss surprising facts about the Scopes "Trial of the Century", drawing from recently available archival material, including private papers of Clarence Darrow and William Jennings Bryan. He'll also examine how, 80 years after the Scopes trial, evolution is back on trial again in our public schools.
  • After meeting dinner will be at the Indian Restaurant Spice Island on State Street.  Details and location are in the Newsletter.  Non-members are welcome. Anyone wanting to come to dinner should let Anne know at 564-6086 or rusans@cox.net This is a non-binding head-count.

    at City College.
    Glenn Branch, Deputy Director or the National Center for Science Education, spoke to us on
    "Assaults on Evolution: From Darwin to Today"
    From banning evolution outright to demanding equal time for 'creation science' to calling for teaching 'the evidence against evolution,' antievolutionists have fought tooth and nail against evolution education in the public schools. Glenn Branch will explore how fundamentalist attacks on evolution have evolved over the decades -- and how they are faring today.

    Richard Appelbaum and Nelson Lichtenstein
    spoke on
    "Do Corporations Rule the World?"
    UCSB professors Richard Appelbaum and Nelson Lichtenstein discussed how corporations now have unprecedented power to break trade unions, globe-trot in search of cheaper labor and lighter regulations, and squeeze the middle class - all while multiplying executive profits. They examined the consequences of these changes, as well as the prospects for containing them.

    Dr. Howard Zisser spoke on
    "Advances in Medical Research".
    Dr. Zisser has played a major role in Diabetes Research at the Sansum Clinic. He talked about the fact that Syndrome X is a metabolic disorder affecting 1 out of every 3 adult Americans. It is associated with insulin resistance, obesity, high blood pressure and elevation in lipid levels. People with this disorder are at high risk for developing Type 2 Diabetes. Zisser says it's important to identify people with this disorder in order to prevent diabetes and its complications.

  • Saturday December 18, 6pm
    Winter Solstice Party. This fun and popular annual social event was held this year in the Sizzler private dining room.
    There was a complete evening of served dinner, wines, choice of entree, dessert, and professional entertainment. Complimentary raffle prizes too!!
    The Dave Lower Duo performed with guitar, harmonica and songs for your pleasure. They have appeared at Cold Springs Tavern, The Four Seasons, and other top SB venues.

    Special meeting at the Fe Bland Auditorium at City College.
    Sam Harris spoke about his best selling book
    "The End of Faith: Religion, Terror and the Future of Reason."
    This Stanford philosophy graduate delivers a startling analysis of the clash of faith and reason in the modern world. He asserts that in the shadow of weapons of mass destruction, we can no longer tolerate views that pit one true god against another. Alan Dershowitz calls Harris's book "A must read for all rational people."

    Jonathan Young, Ph.D. - storyteller, psychologist, and humanist celebrant - spoke on
    "The Myths we Live by".
    Dr. Young was the Founding Curator of the Joseph Campbell Archives and Library. As a professor he created and chaired the Mythological Studies Department at the Pacifica Graduate Institute in Santa Barbara.

    Faye Girsh, senior vice president of End-of-Life Choices (formerly Hemlock Society), spoke about the right of terminally ill patients to choose the manner and time of their death.
    Her program is entitled "Choices at the End of Life: ensuring our wishes will be known and respected."
    Girsh has written extensively and spoken on national radio and TV on the Right to Die, an area in which she has been involved for more than 20 years..

    Regular meeting at Vista del Monte
    Speaker: Clark Adams, on "Sacrilege and Blasphemy in Popular Culture"
    The Increase of Atheism and Religious Satire in the Popular Media - a multi-media presentation.
    Clark Adams is a freethinking activist, co-founder of Infidels.org which runs the Secular Web, the largest website devoted to atheism, agnosticism, humanism, and a scholarly critique of religion. He is also Vice President of Halvason, the Las Vegas and Southern Nevada Humanist Association. He will give his multi-media presentation with the help of cartoons and other visuals to the sound of laughter. Dining Out afterwards at the Sizzler.
